Oceans of Learning

A basket of library books + Pinterest + a field trip is almost all we need for homeschool at this preschool stage.  Our trip to Sea World was the perfect start to a study of the deep blue sea.

We made a coffee filter fish for The Rainbow Fish.

We read lots of non-fiction books about sea animals and got crafty:
sea turtle
shark
hermit crabs for A House for Hermit Crab

After reading a book about sea urchins,
this craft was the perfect follow-up.  We pretended to be predators and determined that sea urchin spines are not so tasty!

After finding all the great ocean math centers at this site,
we did lots of ocean math.

Finally, a little science was in order, so we tried the salt water experiment found here.  Finding out that adding TONS of salt to water helps things float was quite the thrill!  Claire might just grow up to be a scientist, as she tried this experiment 37 times.

A Whale of a Tale

Photobucket
Sea World invites active or reserve soldiers and their families to come for a free visit once per year.  Seriously cool.
This was our third visit and we loved, loved it.
(It was also the ultimate homeschool field trip for the
start of an ocean study.)
