Blessings Bags: Service for Littles

Helping people is simple.
But we make it complicated, don't we?

How do you explain to a four year old that you can't immediately
"build a house, make a bed and give chocolate bars" to the homeless people that she saw downtown?

Should I explain to her that we can't?
Or, should I think about why it is that she thinks it is so easy to help the homeless, and we think it is so hard?
I don't mind writing a check to the homeless,
but I squirm in my seat when a homeless man is outside my car window with a sign while I wait for red to change to green.

Their sign asks for help and I look straight ahead.
I act like an advocate for "the least of these",
yet I find lots of excuses not to really help.

It is complicated to help make long term change for the homeless.
It is not complicated to bless them in a small way.

Remembering the idea found on Pinterest (originally from this blog),
a group of friends gathered together to respond to what was simple to a little girl.

They need some things.  We have lots of things, extra things in fact.

Ziploc bags + donations=25 blessing bags
It is not a home or a bed, but it was a full bag, just meant to bless.

So easy, even your family could do it.

Suggested items: toothpaste, toothbrush, granola bars, fruit cups, socks, protein drinks, water bottles, hydration powder packets, peanuts, Bibles, notes, verses, soap, candy, peanut butter crackers, deodorant, trail mix, McDonald's gift cards
Photobucket
Take them to the homeless, or keep one in your car, ready to give that person who makes you squirm at the red light.

It is an honor to know you. Your heart amazes me. Thanks for sharing a great idea and for admitting that you squirm at the red lights too. Jessica

Oh, Jessica. Thanks so much, but really don't be impressed with us. This idea was totally stolen from the blog I mentioned. Just posted because I would love for other families and groups to do the same!

Love this idea! I will recommend for our Girl Scout Troop. Did you know Mom is going to teach them to sew next month? :-)

BTW, this one allowed comments the old way...

This is a fantastic idea! This thought has been on my mind for a while - I don't like giving money, I'd rather give some things that will truly help them. Thanks for sharing this great idea!
