A Walk Through Bethlehem

For years we have been looking for a live nativity to visit during Advent.   So when the church where Sophia attends preschool announced "A Walk Through Bethlehem", we participated with great anticipation.

When we arrived, the exterior of the church was surrounded with a large stone wall with soldiers standing guard.  Inside the gates were people dressed in period costume tending goats, a llama, sheep, a donkey and a cow.

We were way too into the evening to get good photos, but we did snap a few shots of this very special night.

and even made friends with a crazy chicken without hesitation.

When we stepped inside the church, we had to pay taxes and add our names to be counted for the census.

Our girls were truly in awe.  Unfortunately, our unfed bellies required that we leave before the main musical program.  As a result, we missed the entrance of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.  Sophia was quite disappointed, and still hasn't stopped asking where they were not there.

This will definitely be a new tradition for us, as it truly brought the nativity story to life for all of us.  Lesson learned though.  Next year we won't even think of leaving until Mary and Joseph arrive by donkey.

Our congregation did "Back to Bethlehem" for several years and what an experience! We started with the prophets calling out to any who would listen that the Messiah was coming. We continued through the street of Bethlehem to finally see sweet tiny baby Jesus sleeping as we watched in awe of the Son of God as a helpless human. This is a memory never forgotten. Merry Christmas to all of you,
NC Granny
