Standing on the Shoulders of Giants - Honoring Our Fallen Heros

Loyalty - Duty - Selfless Service - Honor - Courage; just a few of the characteristics and values shared by generations of America's Servicemen and Servicewomen; Heros, Giants. Today, with humbled hearts of gratitude, we honor those who serve and those who have served. We remember those who understood the cost, heard the call, fought courageously, shed their blood and and paid the ultimate sacrifice to ensure freedom for us all.
"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." JOHN 15:13
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that these heros left behind. Yesterday in Church, a Marine LTC spoke to the congregation about these Heros. He described them as Giants, on whose shoulders we all stand. As I've thought about his comments, it has reinforced my beliefs as a Soldier, a husband, and a future father; and how grateful I am for those that answer the call, without question.
"Taps," used at military funerals of today, was first born during the Civil War in 1862. Some years ago, while on deployment, I learned the words to this melody. In honor of our Nation's fallen heros, the words are below.
TAPS
Day is done; Gone the sun,
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest. God is nigh.
Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, Gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.
Thanks and praise, for our days, neath the sun,
Neath the stars, neath the sky.
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

What a great idea! We have Rememberance Day up here in Canada. We have a book called "In Flanders Fields" that we read to the kids. Just so they can remember those who have given their lives for our freedom.

Well said Mark. I had never read the words to Taps - that is beautiful. Our nephew Neal starts his Marine Boot Camp at Paris Island in July - he's the first baby I have seen go off to the Military (I have known many adult men who have served courageously), I have to say there is something stunning about a young man like him voluntarily signing. We are so proud that he has answered the call!

Thanks to all who serve, and those who have to watch them walk away and come home changed men, or sadly, not come home at all.
